You cannot replace the icon on the direct app downloaded from the App Store. These are made by creating shortcuts (bookmarks for applications).
Red notification badges will not show on custom app shortcut icons.
To use these custom icons YOU must create shortcuts on your iPhone.
When your device is connected to a physical external display (CarPlay), accessing some apps through the shortcut will NOT mirror the app on your phone however it will show on the other device (CarPlay display).
When opening an app via a custom app icon, the shortcut function will run in the background to quickly open the app.
Original app icons will still show up in notifications banners.
